Laming out again

I got back into this reviewing thing for a while, but I'm out again. I don't know which shows to watch and the writers strike's got me down.

I'm putting my efforts into Foodood now. If you like to eat, come visit.

Pushing Daisies / Bionic Woman

It's kind of funny how I watch both of these shows in a row. Funny, I say, because one is a whimsical, fairy-tale like comedy, and the other is a fairly self-serious, sci-fi drama.

After a thoroughly enjoyable Pushing Daisies episode, to which my wife declared "I love this show!", I immediately clicked over to a rogue army ranger ruthlessly killing his battalion on Bionic Woman.

My wife removed herself from the room.

Anyway, Bionic Woman was better than usual yesterday. I liked the central mystery, I liked the funny asides of the nerdy tech-guy, and I liked Jaime finally having some sexual tension with someone her own age. I don't want it to turn into Chuck or anything, but they should keep this other agent around for a while.

What say you?

Heroes 1.5

Finally, some ass-kicking powers display! Unfortunately, it was by a shlubby, middle-aged dude in an apartment (Matt's dad for you keeping track at home). I really didn't miss the wonder twins, Claire or anybody else. Even Matt got some good scenes. Now that he switched up dance partners (to Nathan), can we finally kill Suresh?

Oh, and the debut of Kristen Bell was not bad. I like the straight-up electricity power. Maybe it'll give a spark (ba-dum-ching!) to this cadaver of a second season.

Pushing Daisies & Bionic Woman

Pushing Daisies 1.3

Still digging this show, even though I keep thinking every next episode will be the one that tips too far into cheese-ball whimsy. I really like Chi McBride in the series, but, then again, I like him in pretty much anything. I can't get enough of that bald smugness.

Bionic Woman 1.4

I think this show is finding a little bit of rhythm. Jaimie is finding out more about her powers and the whole double-life thing is continuing to plague her relationship with her sister and others. Sarah, on the other hand, is not developing the way I'd like. She needs to have less screen time to be as effective as she was in the first few episodes. I want to know less about her, not more. And I definitely don't want her to be an ambiguous hero. I want a straight-up, bad ass villain: the Venom to Jaimie's Spider-Man. Hopefully, the show will find the right way to balance its yin and yang.

Chuck Heroes

The title says it all. I didn't even watch Chuck this week in order to catch up on Reaper. And I just left Heroes on in the background while I did laundry. It was a better episode this week but it's still just foreplay.

Journeyman continues to pick up the slack of its show-mates. How considerate.

Bionic Woman 1.1 & Reaper 1.1

Ah, the wonders of the Internet! I only finally got to watch the first episodes of these two shows and I'm impressed.

Bionic Woman
I've already read a lot about this episode (and series) and I agree with pretty much all of the feedback. Katee Sakloff steals the show as the "first" bionic woman, but I think the writers will let the Jaime character grow into her new situation. She's not used to being bionic and is still kinda in a state of shock. I hope she grows angrier and more sarcastic. With the exception of taking itself just a bit too seriously, this show is working for me so far.

Reaper
Wow, ok... this is what Chuck is supposed to be like. It's actually funny! And well thought-out, and interesting, and, well, has some verve to it. I'm sure it's been said before, but it bears repeating: the best friend character is Jack Black in a can. Not only is he physically spot on, but he's even got the timing and mannerisms down. Considering how annoying Jack Black has become, can we just replace him for a while with this guy? Hopefully, this show stays on for a while.

Is it just me ...

Or do 60 Minute correspondents always look stupid trying to dress down for entertainment profiles?

That Steve guy just interviewed Bruce Springsteen and his outfits just looked ridiculous. The guy is used to a suit - keep him in a suit! Just 'cause he's interviewing a rock star, doesn't mean he's not a staunch journalist.

Seriously.
